Event Date: 22 березня 2019 року
On the 22nd of March, 2019 at 12 p.m. we are waiting for you and your kids to “Call the Spring”, to meet the birds, to celebrate “Nightingale’s Easter”!
According to the ideas of our great-great-grandparents, starting from the holiday of “Forty Saints” that was celebrated on the 22nd of March, 40 different kinds of birds were comming back from warm countries. They are: storks, swallows, cuckoos, geese, spits, ducks, nightingales and other inhabitants of the boundless Ukrainian groves.
That is why this day was called “The nightingale’s Easter”.
Therefore, Cossack girls of “Mamayeva Sloboda” are inviting you to the children’s holiday – to call the Spring and to meet the birds!
The event will take place on the 22nd of March, 2019 at 12 p.m. on the estate of “The Potter”.
The program includes:
– calling of the Spring and singing spring songs together with the folk group “Bozhedary”;
– the custom of “Calling the Spring”, common games and merry round dances.
– Anyone who wish may pre-order a master-class in making “larks” and “storks” in one of the houses of “Mamayeva Sloboda”.

In old times every mother tried to bake special ritual biscuits for her child. The biscuits could be of different shape and looked like birds with beaks, wings, combs and tails. They were called “storks”, “magpies”, “birds” or “larks”. Sometimes the bird was planted on a bagel (like on a nest), or sometimes the raw dough was attached to cherry branches and carefully baked in the oven. Children were running around holding branches with biscuits in their hands and calling the Spring. The kids believed that after those funny callings the spring would surely come.
Caring kids could leave crumbs in the feeders or put the branches with biscuits on the trees in the gardens. The children knew that acting positively towards birds they would get the blessing of God. The grace of God from the devotion of birds would surely come into poultry. Therefore, the families would have many geese, chicken, ducks, etc.
«Dear stork, why don’t you come to us? Why don’t you bring us the spring?»
